----- In memorial of the 19 anniversary of "June 4 student movement"
19 years have passed, and the memory is still fresh. When June 4th student movement took place, China's democratic system is far from perfect. Some Party members and Cadres were highly corrupted and actively engage in money-power exchange. In mid-1980s, comprehensive reform was performed in urban and rural areas. State controlled economy was replaced by diversified economic structure. Following the economic development, some social problems deteriorated. The price rise and economic chaos caused discontent among mass public. The Party and the whole social had a bad culture. Serious corruption problems cannot be effectively controlled. Intellectuals and students' recognition of the Communist Party fell to a history low. Student movement and demonstration for democracy burst out in Beijing. Students protested against corruption and governmental behavior affecting fair market with hunger strike and sit-in demonstration, pursuing democracy and freedom.
Students cared about the nation's future and wanted to call up the government's attention with their passion. April 15, 1989, former (democratic) government leader Hu Yaobang died of a heart attack, which acted as a trigger of "June 4th student movement". Within a few days, students held sat-in demonstration at Xinhua Gate and the sit-in finally developed into a confrontation with physical contact. The Tiananmen Square was occupied by protesters and more large-scale demonstrations took place. The movement spread to Xi'an, Chengdu, Changsha and some other cities, and finally spread to all over the country. April 27 in Beijing, tens of thousands university students demonstrated on the streets for more than 10 hours with banners and shouting slogans. May 29, Chinese Spokesman had a dialog with student representatives, and the students gradually calmed down. May 20, the Central Government announced the implementation of martial law in some areas of Beijing. There were almost no vehicles on Beijing's major streets, and the economy ground to a halt. College students from other cities gradually gathered in tents on Tiananmen Square. The movement is the last historical problem Chinese government want to be revealed.
Now our juniors cannot even learn about this movement by searching for "June 4 student movement" over the Internet. While the history can never be erased. If the officials were clean and honest, if people could live and work a happy life with human rights, this movement would not have taken place. This movement was defined by Chinese government as political riot that deny socialism and the leadership of Communist Party. Because of the definition of riot, the government utilized armed force and shot the unarmed students with real guns and bullets. The movement finally end up suppressed. All the information about the death toll was strictly kept secret, so up till now, the number of death of students and residents is unknown, and varies from several to thousands according to different resources. The June 4th democracy movement did not shake Chinese government. The Communist Party of China managed to maintain its dictatorship, and continued to suppress dissidents over a long time in the future.
The June 4th tragedy had far-reaching impact over the politics and diplomacy of China. It is the shame of the nation, and the proof that Chinese people had lost their human rights! The democracy and freedom students pursued with their passion and action was not achieved, on the contrary, students were suppressed and killed. This tragedy cast a shadow in Chinese people's hearts and made them more disappointed with the government. Student leaders had to travel abroad. Today we mention the "June 4 student movement" to commemorate the students' courage and fearlessness. "June 4 student movement" belongs to the past. All the merits or demerits are for the history to judge. Although Chinese media made all effort to cover up the fact of this movement, history cannot be forgotten. The people will not forget what they went through in the past.
