The Chinese government restricts citizens' freedom of migration by carrying the Household Registration System. The system discriminates the farmers. In China, the term Farmer is not a career, but a resident status. Farmers are the second-class citizens, whose rights are deprived by the nation's policies.
My parents are farmers and I was registered as a farmer when I was born. Since my childhood, I could feel the unfair treatments on me. For example, the teaching level was very low in our school because the government distributed most educational funds to the urban school. When I grew up, I could feel the discriminations even more clearly. Things like applying for schools or social securities are different from those available in urban area.
Farmers are not able to enjoy the fair treatments like the urban residents. Those who go to the cities to find part-time jobs have to apply for temporary resident's ID cards. They are discriminated in many ways and it happens often that the employers do not pay them on time. There is no any government department would guarantee farmers' rights. After I arrived in the United States, I find out that all American citizens are treated in the same way. For example, they can migrate freely. The farmers are just a career, not a lower-class status. As a farmer resident of China, I hope the Chinese government would withdraw the Household Registration System and treat every single people in the same way.
